Exterior stone installation and masonry require careful hands, a trained eye, and lots of experience. Matt Tichy has built many luxurious stone projects in outdoor spaces, including sturdy walls, decorative columns, and striking gates. He excels at laying out stone in a way that is both beautiful and structurally sound.
Matt Tichy also has professional experience in commercial masonry, creating a large amphitheater in Itasca State Park and working on barracks at Camp Ripley. He knows what it takes to design and build a project that can weather the elements and retain its appearance.
Whatever stone features you need to elevate your exterior space, Matt Tichy can make it for you. Whether you have a clear vision or need help creating the perfect concept, he will deliver a result that exceeds your expectations.
Do stone walls and columns need a concrete foundation?
Yes, stone walls and columns need a concrete footing to prevent them from leaning, cracking, or collapsing. We’ll dig a concrete footing below the frost line to prevent heaving and other threats to structural integrity.
My stone wall is “crying” white powder. Is it falling apart?
That white, chalky powder is called efflorescence. It’s not a defect in the stone; it’s the result of a natural process where water carries salt to the surface of a porous material. You can usually clean it off with a brush and mild vinegar or hire a professional masonry cleaner to take care of it. We design our stone walls with proper drainage to minimize efflorescence.
How do you attach a heavy gate to a stone column?
Typically, we install a steel post inside the masonry column, then attach the gate hinges to that post. This provides a sturdy frame for the gate and protects the masonry.
Do I need a permit for a stone retaining wall?
It depends on the height. Most municipalities allow stone walls up to three or four feet to be built without a permit. We always comply with local building codes to ensure your stone structure is safe and sturdy.
Why does my stone wall need holes at the bottom?
Those are called weep holes, and they protect stone walls from collapsing. If water builds up behind your wall and has no way to drain, it could eventually push your wall over. Weep holes provide a way for water to drain safely.
