Does stone help maintain the temperature of my wine cellar?
Yes, stone absorbs and holds temperature very effectively. Once your cellar is at the desired temperature, the stone will help prevent temperature swings.
Can I build a stone wine cellar on any floor of my house?
We recommend building stone wine cellars in the basement, where the concrete foundation can easily support the weight of stone walls. If you want to build a wine cellar on an upper floor, you’ll likely have to reinforce the joists or opt for stone veneer.
Will the moisture in the cellar cause the stone or mortar to mold?
Stone is naturally mold-resistant, but mortar can be porous. That’s why we use specialized, breathable masonry sealers to prevent mold and mildew from taking root.
What is the best type of stone for a European look?
There are many excellent choices for making your wine cellar look authentically European. We recommend reclaimed brick, limestone, fieldstone, and tumbled travertine in particular.
Can I install stone after my wine racks are put in?
We highly recommend installing the stone before putting in wine racks to protect both your wine and the racks.
