What is repointing and how does it differ from tuckpointing?
Repointing is the process of removing old, crumbling mortar and replacing it with fresh mortar to prevent water from infiltrating your masonry. Tuckpointing is a cosmetic process that uses two colors of mortar—one that matches the stone and a thin line of contrasting color—to create the appearance of finer joints.
How do I know if my masonry needs repair?
If you can stick a penny into a crack in the mortar or if the mortar crumbles when you poke it with a screwdriver, you probably need repairs. If the faces of your stones or bricks are falling off, this may indicate that the mortar is waterlogged and in need of attention.
Can I repoint my own masonry with cement?
We strongly discourage attempts at DIY repointing. Repairing fine mortar joints takes experience and skill. And if you use the wrong type of cement, it could crack your stones.
Why is my mortar falling out?
Mortar is intentionally softer than stone so that as the ground shifts and causes heaving, the mortar takes the stress instead of the stone. Over time, that stress and the effects of weathering can wear away mortar and necessitate repointing.
Is masonry repair a seasonal job?
For the most part, yes. If it’s too hot out, the water evaporates too fast and the mortar becomes brittle. If it’s below freezing, the water in the wet mortar will turn to ice and ruin the bond before it sets. We aim for temperatures between 40°F and 80°F for the best masonry repair results.
